The third annual Omaha Seed Share gives local growers the opportunity to swap seeds and learn about community gardening. There are more than 60 community gardens in Omaha.
Kurt Goetzinger of Benson Community Garden, Inc. says there’s been a local food movement in Omaha, and it’s bringing neighborhoods together. “I can’t tell you how many times people have stopped by, out of the blue, people who I’ve lived next to for 12 or 13 years and have never seen them before, maybe see them driving by, and now they’re coming by just to hang out and get to know the community garden.”
The Douglas County Health Department maintains a searchable database of community gardens, along with information about farmers’ markets and resources to start your own garden. That information is available at www.douglascounty-ne.gov/gardens.
The seed sharing event is at the Douglas County Extension Office at 8015 West Center Road. It begins at noon.
