BCG Member Spotlight:
Kelli, Jos & Goldie
Say hello to Kelli, Jos, and Goldie, a mother-daughters gardening team in their third season at Benson Community Garden! (Shoutout to June, who’s spending the summer with her grandparents!) This crew is all about sunshine, soil, and snacking on cherry tomatoes while soaking up garden time together.
This year, they’re tackling zucchini for the first time — and it’s going wild! With plans for zucchini bread and pasta in the works, they’re embracing the summer bounty. For Kelli, gardening has always been a joy, but sharing it with her girls has made it even more meaningful. “Even in winter,” she says, “we’re sketching out ideas and dreaming of warm days in the dirt.”
Outside the garden, Kelli works at a local historic landmark doing community development and grant writing, and in her free time, she restores vintage clothing, letterpress prints, and loves day-tripping across Nebraska with her daughters. She’s also a houseplant enthusiast — there’s no corner in her home untouched by greenery.
Their favorite thing about the community garden? The sense of connection. “It gets us outside and in the dirt, and we get to meet our neighbors! When we first moved into this neighborhood, joining the community garden was one of the best things we did. It’s become such a wonderful part of our social life for the family. Also, the Benson Community Garden is a lot more than gardening. We’ve made so many fun memories enjoying live music, watching outdoor movies, and celebrating the solstice.”
Their advice to new gardeners? “Zucchinis. Guaranteed to grow.”
And if they could grow anything? The dream is a giant pumpkin, big enough to carve into a jumbo jack-o-lantern for Halloween in the garden.
